The Natural History Museum in South Kensington has kicked off its 2025 Christmas jumper collection, featuring designs modeled by its famed animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex. The launch, which took place on December 11, 2023, showcases a festive range made entirely from 100% sustainable cotton, including matching jumpers, scarves, hats, and socks for both humans and dogs.
The T. rex, a centerpiece of the museum since 1992, donned a festive Santa hat and themed knitwear to mark the occasion. According to Claire Bevan, head of retail and customer contact at the museum, the Christmas T. rex tradition has become a beloved feature for the museum’s annual six million visitors. Bevan stated, “Our Christmas knitwear is one of the shop’s best-sellers, and all profits help support our world-leading scientists’ research and the Museum’s educational public programming.”
Innovative Designs for All Ages
The winter collection is crafted by a sustainable and ethical clothing manufacturer based in Manchester. It includes designs inspired by some of the museum’s most notable prehistoric specimens, such as a T. rex skull and an ammonite fossil. Notably, this year’s offering also provides a matching jumper for dogs, expanding the range to cater to pet owners as well.
Lead designer Ella Wigfall-Gamble expressed enthusiasm about the project, saying, “We loved the challenge of bringing a new roaring design to this enormous T. rex-sized festive knit and think we’ve created something even bigger and bolder this year.” She added, “We’re proud to be working with the leading museum of natural history to deliver a vibrant festive collection that will delight dinosaur fans of all ages, including their four-legged friends.”
A Tradition That Continues to Grow
The Natural History Museum first introduced its Christmas jumper featuring the T. rex in 2021, and it has since become a staple of the holiday season at the museum. This year’s collection not only provides a fun and festive way for visitors to engage with the museum but also reinforces its commitment to sustainability and community support.
As the holiday season approaches, the Natural History Museum’s Christmas jumper collection stands out not just for its unique designs, but also for its contribution to ongoing scientific research and educational programs. The festive knitwear serves as a reminder of the museum’s role in making science accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
