UPDATE: Tensions escalated last night near Villa Park as 11 arrests were made following a protest during the Europa League match between Aston Villa and Maccabi Tel Aviv. West Midlands Police confirmed that clashes erupted as approximately 200 protesters, including members of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, gathered to demand a ban on Israeli teams from international football.
The protests, which began around 7:00 PM local time, saw demonstrators waving Palestinian flags and chanting pro-Palestinian slogans. Authorities reported that missiles were thrown at police officers, prompting a strong response with hundreds of additional officers deployed to ensure public safety. Chief Supt Tom Joyce, Birmingham Police Commander, stated, “This has definitely been one of the most contentious and controversial matches we’ve hosted for some time, but our priority, really clearly, is public safety.”
The police arrests included a 63-year-old man for racially aggravated public order offences and a 21-year-old man who attempted to throw fireworks into the stadium. Another suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was issued a dispersal order but refused to leave the area. Additionally, five flatbed vehicles drove past the ground displaying anti-racism messages and promoting unity in football.
Despite the unrest, Aston Villa managed to secure a 2-0 victory against Maccabi Tel Aviv, finishing the match amid heightened tensions. Officers acknowledged the right to protest but emphasized the need to protect the safety of the public.
As the situation develops, further updates from West Midlands Police are expected in the coming hours. Authorities continue to urge the community to remain calm and respectful towards one another, highlighting the importance of dialogue over violence.
