Emergency Repairs Begin at Stockbridge Bowl; Lake Drawdown Underway

URGENT UPDATE: Emergency repairs have officially begun at Stockbridge Bowl following a critical collapse of the dam’s right-wing wall. The drawdown of Mahkeenac Lake by six feet commenced on November 20, 2023, as announced by Stockbridge Town Administrator Michael Canales during a recent Select Board meeting.

Residents surrounding the Bowl are urged to prepare for significant disruptions as local officials work to stabilize the dam, which poses an immediate risk to the community. Canales stated, “Residents and property owners around the Bowl should expect and prepare for reduced water levels during this period.” The drawdown was ordered by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) after the issue was discovered on November 18 during an inspection.

The right-wing wall’s failure was identified as an urgent structural concern, necessitating swift action. “It is a big issue,” Canales emphasized. The town is mandated to complete these emergency repairs within 30 days, with ongoing coordination involving state departments and local engineers.

While the drawdown has begun, Canales noted that “we do not yet have a definitive timeline for when normal levels will be restored.” The situation remains fluid, impacted by the progress of the ongoing repairs. Although seasonal drawdowns are not unusual, the extent of this drawdown raises serious concerns for the residents.

Officials are cautioning the public to avoid the area near the dam, marked with caution tape and posts for safety. “The Town, together with our engineers and staff, is actively working to ensure the structural safety of the dam and to take all necessary steps to remediate the situation,” Canales explained.

Board Member Ernest “Chuck” Cardillo raised questions regarding the implications of the drawdown, particularly in areas of the lake that may not have the necessary depth. Residents are left grappling with uncertainty about their property, as the town navigates these urgent repairs.

The Stockbridge Bowl Stewardship Committee (SBSC) is also involved, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the ecological health of Lake Mahkeenac. Committee member Michael Nathan expressed concerns about the ecological ramifications of the drawdown, noting, “Whenever we used to lower the lake, like three feet, that’s pretty much where it almost stops.”

As emergency work unfolds over the next month, residents are advised to stay informed through local notices, including a recent CodeRed alert sent to those signed up for updates. The urgency of the situation highlights the need for community vigilance and engagement as repairs progress.

Moving forward, the town will explore long-term solutions to ensure the dam’s stability. Canales indicated that a comprehensive engineering design and possible state funding will be necessary for future improvements following the emergency repairs.
