Elderly Residents Targeted by Burglars Posing as Window Cleaners

URGENT UPDATE: A pair of heartless burglars who preyed on elderly residents in Blyth have been sentenced for their crimes, confirming a disturbing trend of exploitation among vulnerable populations. Margaret Brown, 40, and her partner Matthew Thain, 34, were jailed after targeting kind-hearted elderly women by posing as window cleaners to gain access to their homes.

The shocking incidents unfolded on June 10, 2023, when the duo approached multiple elderly homeowners under false pretenses. According to Newcastle Crown Court, Brown and Thain knocked on doors claiming they were there to clean windows or cut grass, with the intent to steal.

Prosecutor Freddie Adams revealed that they first approached an 84-year-old woman, where Thain falsely claimed to be the son of her actual window cleaner. As Brown engaged the victim in conversation, Thain entered the home, stating he needed to fill his bucket. He later left with Brown, raising immediate suspicion.

Their next target was an 86-year-old woman, who unknowingly paid Thain £10 to clean her windows. The situation escalated when Thain followed her into her home, with Brown claiming thirst and requesting a cup of tea. While inside, they managed to steal the victim’s purse, which contained £130 in cash and other personal belongings.

The elderly woman’s son arrived just in time to confront the pair, who attempted to explain their presence as Thain returned an extension cable. However, their story fell apart, leading the son to call the police. Authorities quickly arrested Brown and Thain nearby, bringing relief to the community.

On September 15, 2023, Thain was sentenced to three years and six months for his role in the burglaries. Brown, who has a lengthy criminal history with 20 previous convictions, received a 29-month sentence and an indefinite restraining order.

Judge Gavin Doig expressed his dismay at the duo’s actions, stating Brown was “seeking to take advantage of the kindness of elderly victims.” Although she entered only one property, her previous record and the calculated nature of their crimes weighed heavily in the sentencing.

Brown’s defense attorney, Lorraine Mustard, noted that the defendant had been crime-free since 2010 but fell back into criminal behavior after beginning her relationship with Thain. She emphasized that Brown is now drug-free while in prison and hopes to relocate upon her release.

These burglaries highlight a growing concern for community safety, particularly for elderly individuals who may be seen as easy targets. Local residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.
