Russian Ambassador Refutes Claims of Nigerian Recruitment for Ukraine War

The Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podyelyshev, has categorically denied allegations regarding the recruitment of Nigerian citizens to participate in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During a press briefing held in Abuja on March 5, 2024, Podyelyshev described these claims as misleading and disconnected from any actions sanctioned by the Russian government.

The ambassador emphasized that there is no official state-backed program involving Nigerians in the Ukraine war. He stated, “If some illegal individuals are trying to recruit Nigerians to fight in Ukraine, this is not connected with the Russian state,” highlighting that any such activities would be unlawful. He assured that any credible information related to illegal recruitment would be referred to Russian law enforcement for investigation.

Military Relations and Cooperation

Podyelyshev elaborated on the nature of military engagements between Russia and Nigeria, which are strictly regulated through bilateral agreements. These agreements primarily focus on military-technical cooperation, including training and potential equipment supply. He underscored Nigeria’s significance as one of Russia’s key partners in Africa, noting that the relationship with Abuja plays a critical role in shaping Moscow’s strategic interests in West Africa.

The ambassador made these remarks during a diplomatic briefing titled “Russia in a Multipolar World Order: African Perspective,” coinciding with Russia’s Diplomatic Service Day. He reiterated Russia’s commitment to a multipolar world order that upholds international law, sovereign equality, and non-interference in domestic affairs.

Podyelyshev also called for reforms in global institutions, advocating for greater representation of African nations in the UN Security Council. He highlighted the expanding cooperation between Russia and Nigeria across various sectors, including defense, education, energy, healthcare, and security. The ambassador revealed plans for establishing a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology in Nigeria and expanding scholarship opportunities for Nigerian students pursuing education in Russia.

In conclusion, Podyelyshev reaffirmed the importance of the Russia-Nigeria relationship, stating, “Nigeria remains a strategic partner,” as both nations continue to explore avenues for enhanced collaboration.
