UPDATE: A 35-year-old man, Sean Atkinson, has been sentenced to three years in prison for a brutal attack on his former partner. The violent incident occurred in Pelton, County Durham, on May 13, 2022, and has left the victim with permanent injuries.
Atkinson, previously convicted of assault, attacked the woman after accusing her of infidelity following their breakup. The victim, who had been on good terms with Atkinson, was awakened around 5:30 AM when he threw her phone at her, shouting, “You’re a f****** s**g.” This outburst escalated into violence, culminating in Atkinson punching her in the face and pinning her down.
In a horrifying twist, Atkinson stamped on the back of her head, breaking her nose before brutally snapping it back into place while restraining her by the throat. This led to an open wound and significant psychological trauma for the victim.
Judge Recorder Christopher Rose remarked on the pain and fear the victim experienced during the attack, emphasizing its distressing nature. The woman described the attack’s devastating impact on her life in a victim impact statement, stating, “It’s stripped me of confidence… I feel I can’t trust anyone.”
Atkinson was found guilty of grievous bodily harm and has also received a ten-year restraining order against the victim. His previous convictions include a serious injury by dangerous driving incident in which he reversed a car over the same victim, causing multiple fractures.
In court, Atkinson expressed remorse through his defense, claiming he wishes to change and improve his life after serving his sentence. However, the emotional scars left on the victim remain a stark reminder of his violent actions.
Authorities are urging other victims of domestic violence to seek help and report incidents, highlighting the importance of support systems available for those in precarious situations.
As this case continues to resonate within the community, it serves as a chilling reminder of the realities of domestic abuse and the urgent need for awareness and intervention.
