UPDATE: The long-awaited completion of the Đalovića Cave project in Bijelo Polje is back in the spotlight as officials confirm significant progress is imminent. Just announced by the Ministry of Public Works, the project is now 80% completed, with aspirations for full realization by 2026.
Authorities emphasize the urgency of this development, detailing that local investors, including humanitarian Hajriz Brčvak, are stepping forward to support the project amid delays. The cave is expected to become a major tourist attraction, drawing over 120,000 visitors annually.
According to spokesperson Anja Ergić, sub-projects include constructing a cable car, visitor center, and necessary infrastructure improvements. “Coordination meetings are underway to ensure that all technical and procedural requirements are met for uninterrupted work in 2026,” Ergić stated.
The Đalovića Cave, located about 20 kilometers from Bijelo Polje, stretches over 17.5 kilometers and is renowned for its stunning geological formations. Speleologist Željko Madžgalj, a key advocate for the cave’s development, describes it as “the largest and most beautiful cave in Montenegro and one of the most magnificent in the Balkans.”
Past delays have stemmed from accessibility issues and regulatory hurdles, including a three-year halt ordered by the Environmental Protection Agency. Recent decisions have cleared the way for resumed construction, marking a turning point for this significant project that began in 2012 under the previous government.
The estimated total cost for the Đalovića Cave project is €32 million, with approximately €22.2 million already utilized for technical documentation, construction, and oversight. Local authorities stress the project’s potential to boost tourism and economic growth in the region.
As work progresses and stakeholders rally, the focus shifts to ensuring that all components are executed efficiently and sustainably. The Ministry is committed to overcoming previous challenges and unlocking the area’s tourism potential.
