UPDATE: A daring wallaby named Rex, who escaped from a New Jersey animal sanctuary, has been safely returned after an adventurous outing near a local Walmart. Rex, who made headlines for his audacious escape from the Lots of Love Farm in Williamstown, was found just one mile away from the sanctuary on Tuesday night.
Rex vanished Monday night when a gate at the farm was left unlatched, prompting an immediate response from the Monroe Township Police Department. Officers urged the community to keep an eye out for the escaping marsupial, providing a detailed description to aid in the search. However, poor weather conditions hampered efforts, preventing the use of a drone to assist in locating Rex.
At approximately 9:05 p.m. on Tuesday, Rex was spotted narrowly avoiding traffic. A mother and daughter duo spotted him in the parking lot of a Walmart and quickly contacted the sanctuary. With their help, Rex was successfully recaptured, marking the end of a thrilling escapade.
“We caught Rex at the Walmart! He is home safe and sound!” exclaimed Lots of Love Farm in a celebratory post on social media, thanking the dedicated citizens who aided in the search. The sanctuary also humorously noted, “He must really like Walmart.”
In a lighthearted response, the Monroe Township Police Department acknowledged their inability to catch Rex, saying, “Thanks to our local media, our officers are nationally recognized horse wranglers… but unfortunately, we haven’t quite earned the title of Wallaby Whisperers.” They added, “Rex is quick!”
Following his adventurous night, Lots of Love Farm announced that Rex would take a short rest before returning to public view from Friday. A welcome home party is scheduled for this weekend, promising a warm reception for the intrepid wallaby.
