Driver Dies in Belleeks Bus Crash Involving 40 Schoolchildren

UPDATE: A tragic bus crash in Belleeks, Co Armagh has resulted in the death of the driver, who was transporting 40 schoolchildren from St Paul’s High School. Emergency services responded urgently to the scene shortly before 3:45 PM today after the private coach flipped over and was left on its side atop a hedge.

Eyewitnesses reported the harrowing scene as children were seen climbing out of the bus through windows and the roof to escape the wreckage. Fortunately, authorities confirm that no students sustained serious injuries during this horrifying incident.

The private coach company, Quinn Coaches, has expressed profound sadness over the loss of their driver, who passed away shortly after the crash. A spokesperson stated, “We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our drivers was involved in a road traffic accident whilst transporting school children today. Despite immediate emergency response, our dear colleague sadly passed away. Our first thoughts are with his family, friends, and fellow colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”

Police continue to investigate the scene, with crash scene investigators working diligently to determine the details leading up to the accident. Principal of St Paul’s High School, Dáithí Murray, reassured families that all children are safe and have returned home. In a letter to parents, he acknowledged the shock experienced by students, stating, “We appreciate that this will have caused a significant shock to pupils who experienced the incident.”

The Education Authority is providing critical incident management support to the school. A spokesperson confirmed that their Critical Incident Response Team will be on-site tomorrow to offer emotional support for affected pupils. “Our thoughts go out to all of those impacted by the incident,” they added.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service reported that they received the emergency call at 3:38 PM and dispatched multiple resources to the scene, including five ambulances and advanced paramedics. A spokesperson stated, “Currently, five ambulances, two advanced paramedics, one officer, and an ambulance doctor are at the scene treating patients.”
