This new chip complies with 3GPP Release 18, features HD-FDD optimization for battery-powered IoT devices, and maintains backward compatibility with 4G Cat-1bis and LTE-M. Dima Feldman, Vice President at Sony Semiconductor Israel, explained that the development roadmap reflects a commitment to creating a cost-efficient and power-efficient solution designed for longevity: “Our Altair ALT1550 roadmap reflects our belief that 5G IoT must be cost-efficient, power efficient, and built for longevity. This is how we help customers transition smoothly from 4G to a sustainable 5G future.”

With HD-FDD technology preferred for its simplicity and reduced power consumption, Sony anticipates that eRedCap could achieve shipment volumes of 50 million units by 2030. This projection suggests a strong market readiness for large-scale transitions, especially in sectors where connectivity and real-time data flow are critical.
