Razer Unveils Project Ava: The New AI Companion at CES 2026

Razer has introduced a groundbreaking AI companion called Project Ava at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas. This innovative device features a 3D holographic character that users can interact with much like existing AI chatbots, but with a significant twist—Project Ava possesses a physical presence and a distinct personality.

Inside a sleek, glass-like capsule, Ava stands as a small, cylindrical desktop unit equipped with a 5.5-inch 3D holographic display. Unlike typical smart speakers, this device allows for real-time interaction, with the holographic character responding through moving lips and hands. The technology behind Ava includes cameras, microphones, and sensors that track user voices, eye lines, and expressions to engage in conversation effectively.

Razer has partnered with xAI’s Grok to power the current demonstration of Project Ava, which connects to a Windows PC via USB-C. This capability allows the device to view the user’s screen, providing gaming tips and enhancing the overall user experience. Initially, the AI companion will offer five distinct holographic characters, including Ava herself and Faker, a renowned esports personality and gaming wingman.

During the demonstration, I interacted with Kira, an anime-inspired character characterized by large brown eyes, knee-high stockings, and kitten ears. Kira’s movements and responses were impressive, showcasing the technology’s potential. However, the experience left me feeling somewhat uneasy, as the combination of advanced AI and customizable avatars raises questions about the implications of such technology.

Razer plans to expand Project Ava’s capabilities further by allowing users to create and design their own avatars. While the technology is undeniably impressive, the idea of personalizing a holographic companion can feel unsettling to some. The detailed hologram and synchronized lip movements add to the intrigue, but they also contribute to a sense of discomfort.

For those interested in acquiring this innovative device, Project Ava can be reserved for $20 in the United States ahead of its official launch later this year. As of now, a release date for the UK or other global markets has not been confirmed.

As technology continues to evolve, products like Project Ava highlight the potential for AI companions to become an integral part of everyday life. The reactions to this new development at CES 2026 indicate a mixture of fascination and apprehension, paving the way for further discussions on the future of human-AI interaction.
