Middlesbrough Targets Hull City’s Charlie Hughes in £10m Transfer Bid

Middlesbrough FC is reportedly preparing an ambitious transfer bid for Hull City centre-back Charlie Hughes, as they seek to solidify their position in the Championship. This news follows Middlesbrough’s impressive 4-0 victory over Southampton on Sunday, which allowed them to climb back into the automatic promotion spots. The win also marked a significant turnaround after a disappointing four-match winless streak during which the team struggled to score.

The match at Riverside Stadium saw Middlesbrough secure only their second clean sheet in the past 15 games, a testament to their need for defensive reinforcements. Coach Kim Hellberg has faced challenges with his squad’s defensive capabilities, which have hindered their efforts in the promotion race. In light of these issues, it is perhaps unsurprising that the club is now linked with the promising defender Hughes.

According to Football League World, Middlesbrough is eyeing Hughes as a key addition to their backline this January. The 22-year-old has made a significant impact at Hull City, starting 23 out of 25 Championship matches this season and accumulating over 2,000 minutes of play. Hughes leads the Tigers in several defensive metrics, including 185 clearances, 53 blocks, 24 interceptions, and 107 recoveries. He has also demonstrated his ball-playing ability, completing 973 passes with 74 passes into the final third.

Middlesbrough has identified Hughes as an ideal candidate to enhance their defensive lineup as they aim for a return to the Premier League. However, they are not alone in their pursuit. Hull City’s owner, Acun Ilicali, has indicated that Hughes’ market value could exceed £20 million by the summer, despite him joining Hull for just £3.5 million in 2024. With Hull City only five points behind Middlesbrough in the promotion standings, the competition for Hughes will be fierce.

In addition to potential new signings, Middlesbrough has recently welcomed Adilson Malanda from Charlotte FC, and several injured players are expected to return in January. While Hellberg acknowledges the need for squad improvements, he is focused on maximizing the potential of his current players.

“I don’t want to sit here and make transfer demands. My job is to work with those who are here, that’s the most important thing, and I’m going to do that,” Hellberg stated. He emphasized the necessity for his team to improve their goal-scoring efforts, noting that “not scoring is not good enough.”

As the January transfer window approaches, Middlesbrough’s pursuit of Hughes could be a pivotal moment in their campaign, potentially altering their trajectory as they strive for promotion.
