Australia secured a stunning victory in the mixed relay at the World Cross Country Championships, held on March 16, 2024, in Tallahassee, Florida. The Australian team, anchored by the impressive performance of Jess Hull, triumphed over strong competition from both France and Ethiopia in the 4x2km race.
The event unfolded on a challenging course characterized by sun, sand, and obstacles reminiscent of steeplechase, notably the wooden hurdle known as “alligator alley.” This unique setting added an extra layer of excitement to the competition as runners navigated the course.
The race began with an intense first leg, where Ethan Strand from the United States and Reynold Cheruiyot of Kenya set the pace. They were closely followed by Australia’s George Couttie, who kept his team in contention, finishing just a few seconds behind the leaders.
On the second leg, Linden Hall took over from Olli Hoare for Australia. Hall quickly asserted her dominance, propelling Australia into the lead. She finished her segment well ahead of her competitors, with Britain’s India Weir handing over to Adam Fogg in seventh place.
As the race progressed into the third leg, France made a strategic move. Antoine Senard overtook Australia’s Jack Anstey during the challenging alligator alley, allowing France to gain a slight advantage. Meanwhile, Fogg remained isolated in seventh for Britain, struggling to close the gap on the leaders.
The final leg saw Australia extend its lead, thanks to the stellar performance of Jess Hull. Hull maintained her composure and speed, finishing with a comfortable margin. Just three seconds later, Agathe Guillemot crossed the line for France, securing second place. Hirut Meshesha brought Ethiopia home in third, while Purity Chepkirui anchored the defending champions, Kenya, to a fourth-place finish. The host nation, represented by Gracie Morris, finished fifth.
Britain, aiming to improve on their bronze medal performance from two years ago in Belgrade, faced challenges throughout the race. Alex Millard ultimately brought the team home in seventh place, unable to replicate their previous success.
Australia’s victory not only highlights the prowess of their middle-distance runners but also sets a promising tone for future competitions. The World Cross Country Championships showcased both the athletic skill and the camaraderie among competitors, making for an exhilarating event in Tallahassee.
