Suspect Arrested for Illegal Gravel Extraction in Montenegro

A 64-year-old man identified as V.M. has been arrested during a police operation aimed at curbing illegal gravel extraction in Montenegro. The incident occurred along the Moraca River, where authorities discovered a working machine actively excavating material from a state-owned parcel. The operation, named “Kajak,” highlights ongoing efforts to combat environmental crime in the region.

The Montenegrin Police Administration reported that V.M. was caught loading the extracted material into his cargo vehicle, which bore Zeta district registration plates. Authorities acted on the orders of the examining prosecutor from the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica, who has indicated that the activities of V.M. could constitute criminal offenses related to unauthorized extraction and damage during the extraction of river sediment.

According to the police statement, both the working machine and the cargo vehicle were temporarily seized. The prosecutor will review the case further and has mandated that V.M. be brought before him within the legally stipulated timeframe, accompanied by a criminal complaint.

Ongoing Efforts Against Environmental Crimes

The police, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, are intensifying coordinated efforts to prevent crimes and offenses associated with illegal gravel extraction. These measures aim to protect Montenegro’s natural resources and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. The authorities emphasize the importance of safeguarding the environment from exploitative practices that threaten ecological balance.

The operation underscores a broader commitment to combat environmental crime and preserve natural resources, reflecting Montenegro’s dedication to maintaining its ecological integrity. As investigations continue, the police administration remains vigilant in their pursuit of those engaging in illegal activities that compromise the environment.
