North Berwick Hairdresser Opens Garden Salon After Downsizing

A hairdresser from North Berwick has received approval to transform a garden room into a salon as part of her decision to downsize her business. After more than 20 years in the industry, Emma Combe aims to offer a more personalized service from her home, allowing her to cater to around six clients each day.

The planning application was approved by East Lothian Council, but it comes with specific conditions. The council stipulated that the salon can only be operated by Combe or future owners of her property, prohibiting the use of the space by independent contractors. This decision ensures that the business remains compatible with the residential character of the area.

Combe expressed her intention to operate the salon three days a week, avoiding weekends as she often works away, providing hair styling for photo shoots and weddings. She described her plan as a way to create a more bespoke experience for her clients while maintaining flexibility in her schedule.

In their evaluation, planners noted that the salon aligns with national policies regarding home working and micro businesses. They confirmed that the scale and nature of Combe’s proposed operation would not adversely impact the surrounding area or the amenity of neighboring properties.

The planners stated, “The use of the erected garden room as a hairdressing salon does not, neither by its nature nor by its scale of operation, significantly change the residential character of the area.”

To safeguard residential amenity further, the council imposed restrictions on the operation of the salon, limiting its hours to 9 am – 5 pm, Monday through Friday. This measure aims to ensure that the new business does not disrupt the local community.

Combe’s initiative reflects a growing trend among professionals seeking to adapt their businesses in a way that enhances work-life balance while providing tailored services to their clientele. As more individuals explore opportunities for home-based enterprises, her case may serve as a model for others in similar situations.
