Lagos and MTN Team Up to Launch Y’ELLO Bus Park Project

The Lagos State Government has partnered with MTN Nigeria to transform the Obalende under-bridge into a modern transport hub named the Y’ELLO Bus Park. This initiative aims to improve mobility, safety, and environmental sustainability in one of Lagos’ bustling areas. The announcement was made on January 27, 2026, by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, through a post on social media platform X.

The redevelopment project will replace the currently degraded environment with a structured and secure facility designed to serve both commuters and local residents. Wahab emphasized the importance of creating a functional public space that prioritizes safety and community needs.

“This redevelopment will convert what was once a notorious and degraded space into a functional, secure, and community-centred facility,” Wahab stated. The Y’ELLO Bus Park will feature an organized transport terminal, a recycling drop-off station, a road camp for LAWMA sweepers and security personnel, over 60 public toilet fixtures, kiosks, and essential amenities aimed at enhancing the experience for users.

Safety and sanitation are central to the design of the transport hub. The project includes infrastructure improvements intended to reduce crime and enhance visibility at night. Solar-powered lighting will illuminate the area, helping to eliminate blind spots and improve the effectiveness of CCTV surveillance, ultimately contributing to a safer environment.

Environmental management will also play a crucial role in the redevelopment. A biodigester system will be established to manage wastewater sustainably, and a dedicated recycling station will be implemented to discourage illegal waste disposal.

Wahab highlighted the project’s alignment with Lagos State’s climate goals, emphasizing the incorporation of renewable energy and greenery. “In line with our commitment to climate responsibility, the project includes the installation of solar panels to support long-term energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint,” he said. Additionally, plans for tree planting will aim to enhance air quality and improve the overall aesthetics of the space.

The initiative reflects a broader vision by the Lagos State Government to reclaim public areas, making them functional, sustainable, and safe for the community. “This project reflects our resolve to reclaim public spaces, make them functional, sustainable, and safe, and ensure they serve the needs of Lagosians in a modern, responsible way,” Wahab concluded.

The Y’ELLO Bus Park project is expected to enhance transport organization in the Obalende area while addressing environmental, security, and commuter welfare issues. This effort signifies a step towards building a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Lagos, aligning with the government’s ongoing commitment to urban development and sustainability.
