Hundreds of individuals have embarked on new apprenticeships at local NHS trusts, marking a significant initiative aimed at enhancing career opportunities within the healthcare sector. This effort is part of a collaborative program between the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust and The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust. The announcement coincides with National Apprenticeship Week 2026, a time dedicated to recognizing the vital role of apprenticeships in building meaningful careers in the NHS.
The two trusts have emphasized the importance of apprenticeships as a gateway to rewarding employment in healthcare. According to Emma Dalton, group head of careers and employability, this partnership aims to expand opportunities. “By working together across our trusts, we are ensuring that people from our communities can access rewarding NHS careers,” she stated. “Apprenticeships enable individuals to earn while they learn, gain recognized qualifications, and build a future in healthcare, while helping us grow the skilled workforce our communities depend on.”
The apprenticeship pathways offered by both trusts cater to a range of roles, including clinical and corporate positions, with levels ranging from Level 2 to Level 6. This collaboration also facilitates career entry and progression through valuable partnerships with schools, colleges, and universities. Since 2025, more than 70 T-Level Health students have completed industry placements within healthcare settings, qualifying with a Level 3 T-Level in Health.
One of the new apprentices, Malika Khalil, who works in the surgery department, shared her positive experience. “I appreciate many things about my role, especially connecting with different individuals every day; they are the reason for my confidence boost,” she remarked. “Only four months into my NHS apprenticeship, and I have developed my communication, problem-solving, data inputting, and teamwork skills.”
The trusts manage apprenticeship programs both in-house and with external partners, providing crucial support for English and maths functional skills. All apprentices are granted protected study time within their contracted hours, ensuring they have the opportunity to focus on their development without incurring costs to themselves or their departments.
For individuals currently out of work, The Learning Works offers tailored support through employability programs, which include assistance with CV writing, interview preparation, and work-readiness training. This comprehensive approach not only enhances the skills of apprentices but also strengthens the healthcare workforce, ultimately benefiting the communities served by these NHS trusts.
As the NHS continues to evolve, initiatives like these play a crucial role in ensuring that a diverse and skilled workforce is available to meet the healthcare needs of the population.
