Stalker Jailed for 2 Years After Posting Child Abuse Allegations

UPDATE: A stalker has been sentenced to two years in prison after he posted false child abuse allegations against his victim online, despite a restraining order. Patrick Egerton, 29, from Spiders Island, Alderbury, Wiltshire, was found guilty of stalking and has been issued a 10-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim or posting about her on social media.

Authorities confirmed that Egerton’s relentless harassment continued over several months, instilling fear in his victim. Investigator Joe Cantillon stated, “Over a period of several months, Egerton has continued to contact his victim, threatening her with violence on occasion and causing her to live in fear.”

Egerton had previously received a restraining order in Northern Ireland, where he once lived, but disregarded it. He was arrested in September on suspicion of harassment in Wiltshire. After being released on bail, he continued his campaign of terror by contacting the victim, her family, and neighbors.

The situation escalated when Egerton began posting damaging allegations about the victim on social media, sharing her address and pictures, which caused her significant distress. He was charged with stalking with a fear of violence and appeared at Swindon Crown Court on November 28, 2023, where he pleaded guilty.

Cantillon emphasized the severity of Egerton’s actions, stating, “He used various social media platforms to spread harmful lies about her and her family — his behaviour has caused her to feel extremely fearful and anxious. This behaviour is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.”

The victim provided a poignant impact statement to the court, revealing the deep emotional toll Egerton’s actions had taken on her life. “Since the beginning of all of this I have been having nightmares. There are certain places that I won’t go,” she shared. “Even though I know he is in prison at the moment I still won’t go. If I go out, I still feel anxious and paranoid. Some days are better than others but there are days where I really struggle.”

This case highlights the critical issue of online harassment and the urgent need for protective measures for victims. With the growing prevalence of social media, the ramifications of such stalking behaviors can be devastating and long-lasting.

As Egerton begins his sentence, authorities urge victims of similar situations to come forward and report harassment, emphasizing that such actions will be met with serious consequences. This case is a stark reminder of the ongoing fight against stalking and the importance of safeguarding those affected.
