UPDATE: A Belfast retailer has hailed significant traffic improvements in the city center as the festive season approaches, with congestion levels markedly lower than last year. Chris Suitor, owner of Suitor Bros Clothiers and Custom Tailors, expressed his appreciation for the efforts of Stormont and local authorities in making travel easier for shoppers this Christmas.
Just last year, the city was paralyzed by traffic chaos during the evening rush hour, a situation Suitor described as akin to “someone threw a hand grenade” at Belfast. This year, however, new measures have been implemented to ease the gridlock. The Department for Infrastructure and Translink have worked diligently to manage roadworks and improve public transport, leading to a much more optimistic atmosphere.
Speaking to Belfast Live earlier today, Suitor highlighted the impact of reopening Durham Street and extending the moratorium on roadworks two weeks earlier than last year. He noted, “This year has definitely kicked off on a better keel than last year regarding congestion. The fact the minister has been backing the Keep Belfast Moving campaign is wonderful.”
With Christmas 2023 just around the corner, Suitor reports an increase in foot traffic compared to last year, attributing this to improvements in transit options and a more welcoming environment for shoppers. “Customers are saying they’re finding it easier to come into town,” he remarked, indicating a noticeable buzz in the city.
Despite the improvements, Suitor insists that there is still work to be done to enhance public transport services. “I’m always on the case of Translink needing to improve our public network,” he stated, urging further investment in both public and private sectors to boost the economy. He believes the new pilot scheme for late-night transport could be a “gamechanger” for Belfast, provided the public supports it.
As the holiday shopping season kicks off, retailers like Suitor are hopeful that the positive changes will encourage more people to spend money in the city. “I feel a confidence out there, and I feel people are going to come into our town and spend money,” he concluded.
As Belfast gears up for the festive period, the community is encouraged to utilize public transport and support local businesses. The city is poised for a vibrant Christmas, and every effort counts in ensuring a successful season for traders and shoppers alike.
