UPDATE: The iconic ice-skating duo Torvill and Dean just switched on the stunning Christmas lights display at the Swift family’s Nuthall home, marking a heartfelt finale to a 22-year tradition. This year’s event, held on 15 November 2023, attracted around 6,000 spectators, all eager to witness the grand illumination of half a million dazzling lights that have raised over £250,000 for charity.
For the past two decades, Tony and Wendy Swift have transformed their property into a winter wonderland, welcoming up to 30,000 visitors each year. This year, they decided to go out with a bang, inviting the Olympic legends to join them for the final light switch-on. The couple’s extraordinary journey began in 2003, inspired by a personal loss that led them to support Hayward House Hospice and the When You Wish Upon a Star charity.
Tony, 66, expressed his disbelief at hosting such esteemed guests in their semi-detached home. “If someone said to me that 22 years ago we’d have Torvill and Dean in our kitchen, I’d think you were barmy,” he said. The excitement was palpable as the beloved skaters, Nottingham’s own legends, engaged with the crowd and shared tea with the Swifts before the lights came on.
The emotional significance of this final switch-on was not lost on the couple. “We wanted our last year to be memorable, and I feel like we’ve done just that,” Tony added. The night was described as “magical,” with the display featuring a festive grotto and an on-site shop offering seasonal treats.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Swift family for their unwavering dedication to this cause,” stated Michelle Dorman, senior community fundraising manager at Nottingham Hospitals Charity. “The funds raised have enhanced the lives of many patients at Hayward House through therapy, counseling, and art activities.”
The Swifts have dedicated countless hours, starting preparations as early as June each year, to create this beloved holiday tradition. After 22 years of hard work and community spirit, they’ve decided to conclude their Christmas lights journey, having made a lasting impact on their community and the charities they support.
As the lights dimmed for the last time, the emotional resonance of the event left many in attendance reflecting on the joy and hope the Swifts have brought into the lives of thousands over the years. The couple’s legacy will surely shine on in the hearts of those who have cherished this extraordinary holiday spectacle.
With their final display, the Swifts remind us all of the magic of giving during the holiday season, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and community spirit that will resonate for years to come.
