Prime Minister Urges 41 Essex Schools to Join Free Breakfast Initiative

The Prime Minister has called on 41 schools in Essex to apply for free breakfast clubs, set to launch in April 2024. Applications for this initiative will open on November 20, 2023, as part of a national rollout that targets 500 schools. This effort follows the successful inclusion of over 750 schools in the programme’s initial phase, which has already seen 15 schools in Essex participating.

The initiative prioritizes institutions with the highest percentage of students receiving free school meals, ensuring that support is directed to those who need it most. Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, emphasized the importance of the breakfast clubs, stating that they significantly enhance children’s learning and overall well-being.

In an interview with EssexLive, Starmer highlighted the positive impact of a nutritious breakfast on students’ academic performance. “All the evidence is that children who have had something healthy to eat in the morning are going to be better at learning, and therefore for their life chances it’s hugely important,” he said.

The breakfast clubs are expected to help parents save up to £450 annually, allowing them to drop off their children earlier and manage their work schedules more effectively. Research indicates that these programs can boost children’s energy levels, improve focus, and contribute to their emotional well-being.

Mrs. Hafise Nazi, interim headteacher at Dr Walker’s Primary School near Ongar, shared her insights on the initiative, stating, “The scheme has become an invaluable start to the school day for many of our children; offering a healthy breakfast and a calm and welcoming space to settle in before learning begins.” She noted the program has led to improved transitions into lessons and encouraged positive interactions among students as they share breakfast together.

Starmer further urged schools in Essex to consider joining the initiative, referencing the enthusiasm of early adopters. “The schools that are early adopters are all really enthusiastic about it. They know the difference it makes to children in their school and they know it makes the chances of the children in their schools so much greater,” he said.

As the application date approaches, the message is clear: Essex schools have a unique opportunity to enhance the educational experience of their students through the free breakfast initiative.
