Local Authors Celebrate Richard Burton and Poetry at Chapter One

Chapter One Bookshop in Narberth is set to feature two significant events this week, focusing on the legacy of Welsh icon Richard Burton and the art of poetry. On November 10, local author Mark Lewis will present a talk entitled “The Myth of Richard Burton” to commemorate what would have been Burton’s 100th birthday. This event is part of the Richard Burton Festival, organized in collaboration with Narberth Museum, which celebrates the actor’s enduring influence.

Lewis, who possesses an extensive collection of Richard Burton film posters, will delve into the myths surrounding the actor’s life, work, and relationships, particularly his renowned partnership with actress Elizabeth Taylor. The talk is scheduled from 18:00 to 20:00, and tickets are priced at £5. Guests can enjoy drinks from the Chapter One bar during the event.

Upcoming Events Highlighting Local Talent

The exhibition featuring Lewis’ collection of Burton memorabilia will be on display at Narberth Museum until December 19. Following Lewis’ presentation, another event will take place on December 5, when author Angela V John will speak at Chapter One, further celebrating Burton’s life and legacy.

On November 14, poet Menna Elfyn will bring her new book, “Parch,” to Chapter One. Starting at 18:30, Elfyn will read selections from her sixth poetry collection, which is published by Bloodaxe Books. She will be joined by local writer and translator Emma Baines, who will also read from the collection. “Parch” features poems written in both Welsh and English, with several translations by Baines, as well as contributions from notable poets including Gillian Clarke and RS Thomas.

Tickets for Elfyn’s reading are also priced at £5, and include a 10 percent discount on the purchase of her book. After the reading, Elfyn will be available for book signings at the bookshop.
