UPDATE: A heroic rail worker who attempted to thwart a knife attack on a train in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, remains in life-threatening condition as police confirm a major incident. The attack, which occurred on November 1, 2025, injured 10 people on the 6:25 PM train from Doncaster to London King’s Cross.
Passengers activated emergency alarms, prompting swift action from the British Transport Police (BTP). Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy praised the unnamed rail staff member, stating, “The actions… were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved people’s lives.” Currently, this staff member is the only individual critically injured following the attack.
BTP officials report that five individuals have already been discharged from the hospital, while two men were arrested at the scene. One, a 35-year-old, has been released without charges, while a 32-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of attempted murder. This suspect boarded the train in Peterborough, just before the incident unfolded.
Witnesses recounted harrowing scenes aboard the train, describing how passengers hid in toilets and the buffet car to escape the attacker. Gavin, a passenger, claimed he saw the suspect being tasered before his arrest. Another witness, Olly Foster, reported that an older man bravely intervened to protect a younger girl from being stabbed, sustaining injuries himself.
The train came to a halt at Huntingdon station where forensic investigators are working to gather evidence. The knife used in the attack has been recovered, and authorities do not believe the incident was terrorism-related.
David Horne, managing director of LNER, expressed shock and sorrow, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.” He commended the emergency services for their rapid response and highlighted the bravery of the train crew.
The driver of the train, identified as Andrew Johnson in reports, is a Royal Navy veteran who has been lauded for stopping the train at the safest possible location for emergency responders. The driver, though shaken, is reported to be in good condition.
Huntingdon station remains closed as police continue their investigation, with disruptions to LNER services expected to last until Monday. Passengers are urged to defer travel where possible and remain vigilant.
Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may assist with the investigation. To report details, contact BTP by texting 61016 and quoting reference 663 of 01/11/25.
