URGENT UPDATE: A convicted murderer is on the loose after escaping from an open prison near Bristol. Police are launching an immediate manhunt for Matthew Armstrong, 35, who absconded from HMP Leyhill along with Daniel Washbourne, 40, between 5pm and 8pm on January 1, 2026.
Authorities report that Armstrong, who was convicted for murder during a robbery in the late 2000s, is now evading capture. He has ties to Warwickshire and is described as a white male, approximately 5ft 9in tall, with ginger hair and scars on his forehead. At the time of his escape, he was wearing a burgundy/orange coat, grey cap, grey tracksuit bottoms with blue accents, and black boots.
Washbourne, who is also on the run, is described as a white male, about 5ft 6in, slim, with brown hair and clean-shaven. He was last seen in a cream fleece, blue tracksuit bottoms, blue hat, and black trainers. Police have confirmed that Washbourne has a history of violence and false imprisonment.
A third man, believed to have fled the facility at the same time, was apprehended in Bristol earlier today. The public is advised not to approach either Armstrong or Washbourne but to report any sightings immediately.
Police have released CCTV footage of both men from the day of their escape and are urging anyone with information about their whereabouts to contact authorities without delay. An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson stated, “We want to hear from anyone who has information around their whereabouts. Please call 999 right away if you see them.”
Officers have been conducting thorough inquiries since the escape was reported at around 9:45 PM on January 1. Despite checking known addresses linked to both men, police have yet to locate them. Authorities are employing intelligence work and other resources to track their movements.
Residents in the surrounding areas are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to ensure community safety. This developing situation highlights the urgent need for public cooperation as officers work tirelessly to bring these individuals back into custody.
