UPDATE: A new proposal to construct between five and eight homes off Mill Road in Wollerton, near Market Drayton, has been submitted to Shropshire Council, igniting significant local debate. The application, filed earlier this month, seeks permission in principle to assess the site’s suitability for development.
The one-acre site, currently used for grazing horses, is located next to the historic Beech House Nursing Home. Documents from Peter Richards & Co, acting on behalf of the landowner, indicate that previous advice from Shropshire Council deemed the location “acceptable” for development. However, local residents are raising urgent concerns.
Peter Richards & Co argues that the proposed housing would stimulate local economic activity and support village services by increasing the resident population. A spokesperson stated, “A modest infill development would represent the most effective use of the site.”
Despite this optimistic outlook, residents are voicing strong objections. During the consultation phase, a resident identified as Mrs. Westwood warned, “Wollerton is a small rural hamlet with narrow roads and pavements that are unsuitable for additional traffic.” She emphasized that the development could dramatically increase vehicle movements, posing safety risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders.
Another resident, Mrs. Matthews, echoed these concerns, stating, “Wollerton has no immediate services. These houses would not enhance the hamlet and would increase traffic on narrow lanes.” Residents are also questioning the need for more housing in an area with limited public transport options and no current housing demand.
The application is set to be determined in the coming weeks, with local community sentiments heavily impacting the decision-making process. Residents can view the full application on Shropshire Council’s planning portal, using reference number 25/04551/PIP.
As the situation develops, the potential for new homes in Wollerton remains a contentious issue, highlighting the ongoing struggle between community needs and housing development pressures. Residents, local officials, and stakeholders will be closely monitoring the outcome of this proposal, which could shape the future of the village.
