Cotton acknowledged that the transition back to the civilian version from the celebrity edition introduces a different kind of pressure. “With celebrities, all the viewers automatically knew who those people were; they knew why they were funny,” he explained. The challenge is to engage audiences with contestants who are less familiar, requiring viewers to develop connections with them throughout the season.
The new installment includes an intriguing twist: a secret fourth traitor whose identity is concealed from both the audience and fellow contestants. This addition aims to invigorate the gameplay and shift the dynamics of the show, encouraging viewers to engage more deeply with the unfolding narrative.
As the competition heats up, Winkleman mentioned that participants become “really brutal” during the roundtable discussions. She emphasized that while new contestants can watch previous series, they should not expect it to provide a strategic advantage. “Every series has a whole new bunch of players, with different minds and different interpretations of the game,” she pointed out.
Last season saw comedian Alan Carr emerge victorious in the celebrity edition, winning £87,500 for Neuroblastoma UK, a charity supporting children with cancer. Carr’s emotional journey through the competition highlighted the intense pressure faced by contestants as they navigated the challenges of deception and strategy.
Winkleman has previously expressed her initial reluctance about taking on the role of host. In a conversation on Gabby Logan’s podcast, she recounted her hesitation to leave her family for the opportunity, but her perspective changed after watching the Dutch version of the show. “I became so obsessed, I sent an email to Kate Phillips at the BBC saying, ‘I booked a train, I want to do this more than anything,’” Winkleman shared.
