A multi-vehicle collision on the M6 caused significant travel disruptions this morning, particularly on the northbound carriageway at Junction 9, affecting the areas of Wednesbury and Walsall. The incident led to the closure of two lanes, resulting in several miles of tailbacks during peak commuting hours.
West Midlands Police responded swiftly by blocking the road to facilitate the removal of the crashed vehicles. Although all lanes have since reopened, authorities reported that traffic flow remained slow due to onlookers.
National Highways: West Midlands provided updates via social media platform X, stating, “Lanes 2 and 3 (of 3) are closed on the #M6 northbound within J9 (#Wednesbury #Walsall) due to a multi-vehicle collision. Traffic Officers are on scene and recovery en route. There are approximately 2 miles of congestion in the area on approach, so please allow extra travel time.”
As the situation developed, the agency confirmed that all lanes were eventually reopened. They noted, “Traffic was held briefly by police to aid in removing traffic management. Please allow extra journey time while traffic flow returns to normal. Congestion is currently back to Junction 1 of the M5.”
According to traffic data monitor Inrix, the earlier delays have now cleared following the accident on the M6 northbound between Junction 8 (M5) and Junction 9 (A461 Wood Green Road). The previous congestion extended to Junction 7 (Great Barr) and back to Junction 1 of the M5, affecting drivers heading towards West Bromwich and Birmingham.
Despite the reopening of the lanes, drivers are still experiencing slower speeds due to the lingering effects of the earlier incident. The disruption highlights the challenges of managing traffic flow during peak hours and the impact that accidents can have on the daily commute.
Motorists are advised to remain cautious and allow for additional travel time as conditions gradually normalize.
