A devastating fire at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in Hong Kong has resulted in at least 36 deaths, with authorities reporting that nearly 300 residents remain unaccounted for. The tragedy unfolded during the night, prompting an emergency response that included over 767 firefighters and 400 police officers battling the flames.
During a press conference held at 01:00 on March 15, 2024, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu provided updates on the situation, confirming that 279 people are still missing and 29 individuals have been hospitalized. The complex, made up of eight blocks and home to approximately 4,000 residents, has raised fears that the death toll could increase as search and rescue efforts continue.
Fire Spread and Emergency Response
Fire services officials have reported that the fire is “gradually under control.” Chief Executive Lee noted that the Fire Services Department has adequate manpower and resources to extinguish the blaze. Initial investigations revealed that the presence of styrofoam within the buildings contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, igniting residential flats through the corridors.
“The fire spread was suspicious,”
stated Chris Tang, Secretary for Security. He confirmed that the police and fire services will conduct a joint investigation, including a criminal probe into the fire’s cause and the abnormalities observed during the incident. Survivors have indicated that fire alarms failed to activate during the outbreak, a claim that has raised serious concerns about safety protocols.
Survivor accounts describe a chaotic scene as residents reportedly did not receive any warning of the fire until they could smell smoke. Former district councillor Herman Yiu Kwan-ho highlighted that alarms did not trigger even as residents started to evacuate.
Casualties and Condolences
Among the deceased is Ho Wai-ho, a firefighter who lost contact with his team during the operation and succumbed to the fire. Ho, aged 37, had dedicated nine years of service to the Sha Tin Fire Station. Another firefighter sustained a leg injury, while others suffered from heat exhaustion.
Medical facilities are currently treating seven individuals at the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital and the Prince of Wales Hospital, with two people listed in critical condition.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and has called for comprehensive efforts to extinguish the fire and minimize casualties.
In response to the crisis, Chief Executive Lee has activated an emergency incidents monitoring and support center. This center will facilitate communication between the Security Bureau and the Fire Services Department, ensuring a coordinated approach to rescue efforts. A hotline has also been established for public inquiries regarding casualties, with the number 1878 999 made available to residents seeking information.
As the situation develops, officials continue to urge caution and support for those affected by this tragic event. The full scale of the disaster is still being assessed, and many families remain in distress as rescue operations persist.
