A woman was discovered dead in her vehicle parked outside a police station in Lake Illawarra, New South Wales, after being unaccounted for three days. The body was located by officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District at approximately 16:30 on December 5, 2025. Preliminary assessments indicate that she had been in the car since around 18:30 on December 2, 2025.
According to Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar, CCTV footage shows the 48-year-old woman entered the police station earlier on December 2, where she interacted with officers and spent time in the foyer. Afterward, she exited the building and is believed to have returned to her vehicle, where she was later found deceased.
The exact circumstances surrounding her presence at the police station are unclear. Assistant Commissioner Cassar noted, “It does appear the woman had been living inside that vehicle.” Investigators are looking into whether she had sought assistance from the police during her visit.
A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance confirmed that paramedics assessed the woman upon discovery but were unable to revive her due to the state of decomposition. The vehicle had been locked, and the high temperatures experienced recently in the region likely contributed to the rapid deterioration of her condition.
In response to the incident, a critical incident investigation has been launched by the South Coast Police District. The investigation will be subject to independent review by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
A crime scene has been established at the location on Pioneer Drive, where the body was found. Police are working diligently to formally identify the woman, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner’s review.
