Windy Hill Farm Celebrates 45 Years of Growth and Community

URGENT UPDATE: Windy Hill Farm in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, is celebrating nearly 45 years of agricultural success and community engagement. Owners Dennis and Judy Mareb invite visitors to explore their vibrant orchard and garden nursery, which has become a beloved destination for locals and travelers alike.

Today, the Marebs reflect on their journey, which began when they transformed an abandoned dairy farm into a thriving horticultural business. “We had to fight for every inch,” Dennis recalls, noting the challenges they faced in the 1980s when interest in farming was low. It took them five years and a no-interest loan from the Lotta Crabtree Fund to launch the farm, a true testament to their perseverance.

Windy Hill Farm is now a bustling hub featuring six acres of apple orchards, two acres of blueberry fields, and a full-service landscape department. The farm is renowned for its pick-your-own blueberries and apples, making it a summer favorite for families. “Our u-pick blueberry fields are another highlight for Windy Hill customers each summer,” Judy emphasizes.

As the holiday season approaches, Windy Hill will soon be filled with fresh-cut Christmas trees, ready for local families. The holiday shop opens daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., where visitors can find handmade wreaths, ornaments, and special decorations. The Marebs encourage early visits for the best selection of winterberries, which are a unique offering from the farm.

In addition to their celebrated fruits, Windy Hill Farm is distinguished by its extensive collection of winterberry, boasting 15 varieties. “There’s a huge fall market for winterberry,” Judy notes, sharing that they have shifted their harvest schedule to meet increasing demand. The couple takes pride in their sustainable practices, ensuring the land remains productive for future generations.

The Marebs’ commitment extends beyond their business; they are dedicated to teaching and mentoring younger farmers, fostering a vibrant farming culture in the Berkshires. “You have to really love this lifestyle,” Dennis states, acknowledging the challenges of sustainability in modern agriculture.

As they celebrate this milestone, the Marebs remain focused on community engagement and environmental stewardship. Dennis expresses gratitude for the support they’ve received, stating, “We’ve been so lucky that we’ve been able to make a living on the land and support so many families who work with us and for us.”

With their farm thriving, the Marebs invite everyone to share in their success. Windy Hill Farm continues to be a staple of the Great Barrington community, and their story is an inspiring reminder of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.
