Urgent Update: Mark Ratcliffe, 67, Dies in Withernsea Rescue Attempt

UPDATE: A tragic incident unfolded in Withernsea on January 2, leading to the death of 67-year-old Mark Ratcliffe, who heroically attempted to save two individuals from the sea. His family has described him as “a true selfless hero with a heart of gold,” mourning the loss that has left many lives shattered.

Around 3 PM on Friday, emergency services, including the Coastguard, RNLI, and Humberside Police, launched a massive search and rescue operation after reports of multiple people struggling in the water. Sadly, Mr. Ratcliffe was found unconscious and later pronounced dead.

The situation escalated when a wave knocked a young girl into the icy waters near the Pier Towers. Witnesses reported that others, including Mr. Ratcliffe, bravely jumped in to assist her. Alongside Ratcliffe, a 45-year-old woman was also recovered but did not survive. Currently, one individual remains missing, prompting authorities to maintain a strong police presence in the area.

Authorities confirmed that initial search efforts were paused around 12:30 AM on Saturday but resumed at 6:30 AM in freezing, snowy conditions. The search operation continued until late Saturday afternoon with no further updates on the missing person.
