UPDATE: Upleatham Bridge in East Cleveland is set to close for urgent repairs starting November 10, 2023, after multiple cracks were discovered following vehicle collisions. This historic bridge, built in 1755, has suffered significant damage to its stone parapet, prompting immediate action from local authorities.
The repairs are expected to last approximately six weeks and, weather permitting, will be completed by Christmas 2023. The bridge, which spans Skelton Beck and is located on the B1268, is crucial for vehicles traveling to Guisborough and Skelton.
Officials from Redcar and Cleveland Council have confirmed that the work will involve carefully removing the damaged section of the parapet and restoring it using as much of the original stone as possible. If replacement masonry is necessary, it will match the original sandstone style to preserve the bridge’s historical integrity.
“The overall condition has been assessed and care has been taken to apply conservation principles,” a council heritage statement noted.
In addition to parapet repairs, the project will enhance road safety with new white lining, traffic signs, reflective road studs, and surface-mounted bollards. These improvements aim to mitigate the risk of future collisions, particularly given the bridge’s narrow width of approximately 5.2 meters, which currently poses challenges for two vehicles navigating in opposite directions.
The bridge’s east parapet was reported to be “significantly leaning,” with a 150mm gap developed between the road surface and the parapet wall after inspections revealed extensive impact damage. This discovery necessitated immediate repairs to ensure public safety.
The council’s decision to grant listed building consent is designed to maintain the bridge’s special interest while complying with local planning policies. The work will be carried out by specialized contractors who will adhere to strict conservation guidelines to prevent damage to the historic structure.
As the bridge will be closed for repairs, a signed diversion route will direct traffic through Apple Orchard Bank and Marske Lane, ensuring minimal disruption during the construction period.
