UPDATE: Rail passengers in Cornwall face extended disruptions as signal works between Newquay and Par are taking longer than anticipated. Authorities have confirmed that replacement bus services will remain in place, significantly affecting travel plans.
The latest delay means trains, initially set to resume on November 8, will not return until the complex testing of the new digital signal system is complete. Passengers are urged to plan their journeys now, as bus services will run between Newquay and St Austell, with additional transfers required for those traveling to Par.
This critical infrastructure upgrade is essential for future rail services, allowing for an hourly train service between Newquay and Par starting next year. Once finished, this will more than double the current service frequency and establish a direct link from Newquay to Falmouth via St Austell and Truro.
Network Rail‘s Industry Programme Director, Bogdan Lupu, expressed regret over the delays, emphasizing that safety remains the top priority. “We’re really sorry to passengers for the extended delay. Signalling is the most complex work we undertake on the railway, and we need longer than planned to complete the required testing,” he stated.
Travelers should note that during this period, trains will not stop at several stations, including Newquay, Quintrell Downs, St Columb Road, Roche, Bugle, or Luxulyan. However, trains will continue to operate from Par towards Plymouth and Penzance.
Great Western Railway’s station manager for West Cornwall, Lee Goodson, reassured passengers about the long-term benefits of the project. “This improvement work is part of wider plans to enhance train services, making it easier for people to choose train travel across Cornwall,” he said.
The delay is understandably frustrating for travelers, but officials stress that completing these essential works is crucial for improved rail services in the future. Passengers are advised to check GWR.com for updates and plan for potentially longer journey times.
As this situation develops, more updates will follow. Stay tuned for the latest information on rail services in Cornwall.
