UPDATE: The historic Grade II-listed Civic Centre in Colwyn Bay remains in a state of disrepair, sparking outrage among local residents. Councillor David Carr questioned during a finance and resources committee meeting this week why the building, sold for just £250,000, has not been redeveloped as promised.
The Civic Centre’s decline has been shocking since its sale in late 2022 to hotelier Ian Robbins of Parc Eirias Hotel Ltd. Robbins vowed to invest between £2-3 million to transform the structure into a four-star hotel, but no construction has commenced. Following the lack of progress, Conwy County Council took enforcement action regarding the property’s deteriorating condition.
In a further twist, Robin Brookes, a businessman from Glan Conwy, purchased the building in the summer of 2023 with plans to convert it into an “aparthotel.” However, local frustration has reached a boiling point as the Civic Centre remains boarded up, weeds overrun the land, and promises of job creation and redevelopment remain unfulfilled.
During the scrutiny meeting, Cllr Carr expressed his disappointment: “Local people are very unhappy about it. We were promised it was going to be a hotel, and it was going to create jobs for local people, and those things haven’t happened.” Residents have voiced concerns over the sale price, likening it to that of a semi-detached house, further fueling their frustration.
Next Steps: Cllr Cheryl Carlisle, chairing the meeting, stated that council officials would address these pressing concerns outside the public forum, referring them to the council’s chief executive, Rhun ap Gareth. The local community is eagerly awaiting answers and action regarding the fate of this iconic structure.
The Civic Centre’s future hinges on swift action and accountability, as residents demand clarity and a commitment to revitalizing this historic landmark. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as officials respond to the growing discontent in the community.
