Urgent: Cardiff Police Station Transformed into New Flats

UPDATE: Work has officially commenced on the transformation of a former police station into a new block of flats in Llanedeyrn, Cardiff. After more than five years of delays, the long-awaited housing development is now taking shape, with initial groundwork beginning earlier this week.

The former police station, demolished in 2017, is part of a broader multi-million pound initiative aimed at revitalizing the Maelfa suburb. Local councillors announced on October 28, 2023, that construction has finally started, bringing much-needed housing to the area after an extended wait.

The project was initially set to kick off before the five-year deadline following planning permission granted in April 2020. However, delays arose when the main contractor entered administration in October 2021. Now, the site is buzzing with activity as crews begin to pile foundations, using heavy machinery to drill into the ground for the new building.

This residential development will include 41 fully accessible one and two-bedroom homes, designed specifically to support older residents in living independently. The ground floor will feature communal facilities aimed at fostering social interaction and providing essential support services. Residents can look forward to activity spaces, a staff room, a medical room, and a landscaped communal garden that connects with the existing Maelfa tower block.

The Maelfa Regeneration Scheme has already seen significant changes in the area, including the demolition of the former shopping center to make room for new commercial spaces, housing, improved road infrastructure, and over 40 parking spaces.

Construction work is scheduled from Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, ensuring that the development progresses efficiently. The community’s excitement is palpable as they anticipate the benefits this project will bring, including enhanced living conditions and a renewed sense of community.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the transformation of the Llanedeyrn police station unfolds, promising to reshape the neighborhood for years to come.
