UPDATE: A North East animal shelter urgently seeks outdoor homes for 10 feral cats currently living in distressing conditions. This call to action comes as Cats’ Protection’s Tyneside Adoption Centre reports that 17 cats were rescued from an unsuitable home in Tyneside, with seven already rehomed.
The remaining 10 cats are facing extreme stress in their current environment, and the shelter lacks the capacity to take them in for socialization. Volunteers have emphasized the immediate need for suitable outdoor placements to ensure these felines can thrive. Michelle Adams, volunteer team leader, has been pivotal in rehoming cats to large outdoor spaces where they can receive shelter and regular feeding, such as stables and farms.
These cats, having experienced little to no socialization, cannot be adopted as family pets. However, past efforts show promise; Cats’ Protection has successfully placed “inbetweener” cats in outdoor settings. Adams has already rehomed two cats at a holiday park in the Scottish Borders and five more on a farm.
Each cat is undergoing essential veterinary care, including neutering, flea and worm treatment, and vaccinations, costing around £180 per animal. Adams stated, “We are working closely with the owner to get the best outcome for these cats. They need to be rehomed in large, safe outdoor spaces.”
“They have had a tough life up until now and we are doing everything to get them rehomed to places where they can safely live without fear,” Adams added.
Potential adopters are encouraged to consider rehoming cats in pairs, as this can help them adjust more comfortably to their new environments. While there is no expectation for them to become indoor pets, over time, they may choose to come indoors.
Anyone interested in helping these cats find a safe space can contact Cats’ Protection Tyneside Adoption Centre at 0191 653 1052 or visit their website at https://www.cats.org.uk/tyneside.
This urgent appeal highlights the critical condition of these feral cats and emphasizes the need for community support to ensure their health and wellbeing are prioritized. Act now to make a difference!
