Urgent Alert: Dogs Trust Warns of Frozen Lakes Danger

URGENT UPDATE: Dogs Trust Shrewsbury has issued an immediate warning as freezing temperatures create dangerous conditions on lakes and ponds. With icy surfaces not strong enough to support a dog’s weight, the risk of pets plunging into freezing water is alarmingly high.

The charity emphasizes that if a dog falls through the ice, owners must not attempt to rescue their pets themselves. Cold water shock poses severe risks, including panic and inhalation of water, which can lead to fatal heart attacks, even in otherwise healthy individuals. Emergency services, such as the fire department, will prioritize rescuing people over animals, highlighting the need for caution.

Dom Burke, a behavior officer at Dogs Trust Shrewsbury, stated, “Temperatures have dropped sharply in recent days, and many bodies of water are now frozen. While icy ponds and lakes may look inviting for curious dogs, they pose a serious risk to both dogs and their owners.”

IMPORTANT ADVICE: If your dog falls into icy water, encourage them to swim back to the edge and call 999 immediately for assistance. If you’re walking near frozen water, keep your dog on a lead to prevent accidents.

As cold weather continues to impact Shropshire and Mid Wales, the charity urges all dog owners to be vigilant. For further information on keeping dogs safe during winter, visit dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/life-with-your-dog/seasonal/cold-weather-advice.
