UPDATE: A shocking surge in crashes on the A40 in Carmarthenshire has raised urgent safety concerns, with over 250 collisions reported in less than five years. Between January 2020 and June 2025, a stretch of the A40 connecting Carmarthen and Llandovery has seen a staggering 249 accidents, according to data obtained from Dyfed-Powys Police. This includes a disturbing rise in incidents, with 58 collisions recorded in 2023 alone and an additional 59 in 2024.
The urgency of the situation is underscored by recent tragic events. In October 2024, two individuals lost their lives in a motorcycle crash near Llandovery. Just months later, in July 2025, 18-year-old Sally Allen was killed in a crash near Broad Oak, further highlighting the road’s dangerous reputation.
Local politicians are voicing their outrage. Adam Price, Member of the Senedd for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, stated, “The number of road traffic collisions along the A40 is deeply concerning. I urge the Welsh Government to consider necessary measures to improve its safety.”
Similarly, Ann Davies, the Member of Parliament for Caerfyrddin, described the crash statistics as “alarming” and emphasized the profound human impact behind each number. “These statistics are stark, but behind every number is a human story, families, and communities deeply affected by loss and injury,” she said.
Authorities reported that the stretch of road in question spans 27 miles and has become notorious as a crash hotspot. The national speed limit of 60 mph applies here, yet the data indicates that there have been roughly one collision per week since the start of this decade.
In response to the growing pressure, Ken Skates, the Welsh Government’s cabinet secretary for transport, acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. “We routinely review personal injury collision data to inform improvements on the trunk road network including this section of the A40,” he stated.
