BREAKING: Ubisoft has just announced the launch of a closed-playtest prototype called Teammates, integrating generative AI companions into a classic first-person shooter framework. This groundbreaking project aims to redefine player interaction through natural voice commands, allowing AI squadmates to interpret tone, intent, and environmental context.
Developed using the Snowdrop engine and powered by Google Gemini, Teammates features an engaging trio of characters: Jaspar, a chatty in-game assistant; Pablo, a cyborg capable of tactical maneuvers; and Sofia, another cyborg who collaborates with Pablo in real-time. These AI companions can not only assist with gameplay mechanics but also interact with players in a dynamic and evolving manner.
Ubisoft is currently gathering feedback from a select group of hundreds of closed testers to refine the technology before incorporating it into future AAA titles. This initiative is part of a significant research and development effort, rather than a direct product launch.
In a statement, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot emphasized the transformative potential of generative AI in gaming, likening its impact to the historic shift to 3D graphics. Meanwhile, director of gameplay Xavier Manzanares highlighted that Teammates is designed to help players “feel like a leader” through voice-led interactions.
“The goal is to give AI meaning rather than replace human creativity,” says narrative director Virginie Mosser, emphasizing that writers still craft character sheets and emotional guidelines for NPCs.
Despite the excitement surrounding this innovative approach, Teammates arrives at a time of skepticism regarding corporate AI initiatives. Many in the gaming community are debating the implications for labor, authorship, and the role of AI in game design.
This prototype hints at a future of more reactive and accessible gameplay, potentially changing how solo players engage with narratives and challenges. As Ubisoft continues to collect insights from its testers, the gaming world will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold.
