UPDATE: The Scottish Government has just confirmed a £1 million funding package for Perth and Kinross Council (PKC) to assist with the devastating aftermath of the fatal fire at 41 Scott Street. The tragic incident, which occurred in the early hours of June 14, resulted in one man’s death and left multiple others injured, destroying several flats and the popular pub, The Royal Bar.
The council has already incurred expenses of approximately £934,000 and anticipates total costs skyrocketing to around £3.2 million. Most of these costs stem from essential demolition work and restoring the street-scape. PKC is actively negotiating with insurance companies to recover some of these expenses but faces challenges with welfare support costs that are likely irrecoverable.
In an urgent letter to Minister for Public Finance Ivan McKee, council leader Eric Drysdale highlighted the pressing need for financial assistance, requesting a swift response regarding support for the council’s efforts since the tragic fire. His advocacy has paid off; at a recent meeting of the Finance and Resources Committee, PKC’s finance chief, Scott Walker, announced the funding allocation, stating, “Just this morning, funding from the Scottish Government of £1 million was confirmed and this will be paid on December 15.”
The impact of the fire has been profound, with a total of 55 households requiring rehousing. PKC has mobilized emergency aid for both residents and local businesses significantly affected by the incident. Demolition operations are still ongoing, and many residents remain in temporary accommodation.
Expressing his gratitude, SNP council leader Eric Drysdale remarked, “I’m delighted to see my letter to the Minister has secured £1 million of financial support from the Scottish Government towards the costs associated with the tragic Scott Street fire. I remain committed to doing what I can and need to do to secure the best outcomes for Perth and Kinross as a whole.” He also acknowledged the hard work of council officers in securing this vital funding.
As the situation develops, residents and officials alike are hopeful that the funding will provide essential relief and support necessary for recovery. Stay tuned for more updates on this urgent situation as PKC continues its efforts in the wake of this tragedy.
