Riyadh Air’s Boeing 787-9 Completes First Test Flight Today

UPDATE: Saudi Arabia’s newest airline, Riyadh Air, has achieved a major milestone with its first Boeing 787-9 completing a significant test flight today in Charleston, South Carolina. This pivotal event, known as test flight B1, took place on December 23, 2023, marking a critical step towards the airline’s operational readiness.

The aircraft, flown by Boeing test pilots, underwent extensive assessments to ensure its airworthiness before being delivered to Riyadh Air. This testing phase is essential, as new planes must complete rigorous manufacturer-led certification procedures to confirm they are fit for commercial service. Upon completion of the test program, Riyadh Air pilots will conduct their own evaluations before the aircraft is officially handed over.

Riyadh Air is set to revolutionize air travel in and out of the Kingdom, aiming to operate up to 100 destinations by the end of the decade. Currently, the airline has announced flights to London Heathrow and Dubai International Airport, with its first commercial flight scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

This ambitious airline, launched as part of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) initiative, is projected to contribute $20 billion to the Kingdom’s economy and create more than 200,000 jobs. It will serve as the second flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, taking over a majority of domestic and international flights from King Khalid International Airport (RUH).

In a statement from the airline, officials emphasized that this milestone reflects Riyadh Air’s steady progress towards operational readiness. The airline plans to enhance travel experiences with state-of-the-art features, including advanced in-flight entertainment systems, robust connectivity, and authentic Saudi hospitality.

Riyadh Air is committed to being digitally native, ensuring seamless digital interactions throughout the passenger journey while emphasizing responsible environmental and governance practices.

As this airline prepares to grow, it currently operates a leased aircraft from Oman Air, which will assist in training and technical operations until the full fleet of 182 aircraft arrives, including models from Airbus and Boeing.

Watch for further developments as Riyadh Air continues to soar towards its ambitious goals. This is just the beginning of a new era for air travel in the Middle East, and the world will be watching closely.
