RAC Urges Drivers to Switch Off Five Key Functions NOW!

UPDATE: The RAC has just announced an urgent warning for drivers in the UK to switch off five critical functions in their vehicles to prevent flat batteries this January. As millions prepare to hit the roads following the festive season, experts stress the importance of turning off the lights, heater, fan, heated rear windscreen, and radio at the end of every journey.

With many families using only one vehicle during the holidays, the risk of a dead battery looms large. RAC mobile servicing and repairs team leader Nick Mullender stated, “A flat battery at the start of the new year is more than enough to drain away the last of the Christmas spirit.”

This advice is particularly vital for drivers returning from holidays or those who have parked their cars for extended periods. The combination of cold weather and inactivity can create the perfect storm for the “flat battery blues.”

In addition to switching off these five key functions, motorists are urged to unplug dash cams and other devices that can drain the battery overnight. January is notorious for cold snaps, which can exacerbate battery issues, especially for vehicles over four years old. The RAC emphasizes that older batteries are significantly more susceptible to failure in chilly conditions.

Drivers are also reminded that electric vehicles are not exempt from this risk. Like traditional internal combustion engines, electric cars rely on 12-volt batteries for starting. To mitigate issues, it is essential to take vehicles for occasional drives and ensure that the high-voltage battery remains charged above 20% during the winter months.

In a proactive move, the RAC recommends that drivers inspect battery connections to confirm that terminals are tight and free from corrosion. Remember, battery acid is highly corrosive to both skin and paintwork.

Before you need your car, make sure to take it for a proper drive. A decent run not only charges the battery but also warms the engine. Simply starting the car briefly can actually drain the battery further. If you find yourself in a situation where the car doesn’t start, taking action sooner rather than later gives you ample time to resolve the issue.

As drivers gear up for travel this month, heeding these recommendations could save them from the frustration of a flat battery. Stay vigilant and keep your vehicle ready for the road!
