Pret A Manger to Remove All Express Coffee Machines by Feb 2026

URGENT UPDATE: Pret A Manger has confirmed it will completely withdraw its Express self-service coffee machines from the UK by the end of February 2026. This decision impacts the coffee chain’s more than 700 outlets globally, as the machines, which were introduced in 2021, will be phased out to refocus on the expansion of its retail presence across the UK.

The announcement follows an examination of correspondence from Expresso Plus, the distributor of Pret Express. A representative from Pret stated, “We have taken the decision to end our Pret Express trial so that we can focus investment on continuing to grow our UK shop estate.” This change highlights Pret’s commitment to enhancing its in-store offerings rather than self-service options.

Currently, there are 110 Pret Express machines located in various sites, including petrol stations and corner shops. These machines provided customers with the same quality coffee as found in Pret cafes, including non-dairy choices. The removal of these machines signifies a strategic pivot for the coffee chain as it seeks to elevate its traditional retail experience.

In addition to this change, there are reports that Expresso Plus may enter a new partnership with a different coffee brand, potentially L’OR, known for its premium coffee blends. Sources indicate that this new deal could be a “competitive commercial arrangement” with no upfront investment necessary.

Meanwhile, Pret A Manger has also launched a new ‘Super Plates’ range in over 250 shops across major UK cities, including London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Manchester on July 9, 2025. These larger servings of nutritious salads, including Miso Salmon and Chipotle Chicken, aim to cater to the rising demand for protein-packed, nutritious meals.

Briony Raven, Chief Customer & Product Officer at Pret, emphasized the importance of this new product line: “Our range of protein-packed options, made with premium ingredients, are perfect for when you’re quickly grabbing lunch on-the-go.” This indicates Pret’s ongoing evolution in response to customer preferences.

As Pret A Manger continues to innovate and adapt, the removal of the Express machines serves as a pivotal moment in its strategy to focus on enhancing the in-store experience for customers. With these significant changes on the horizon, all eyes will be on Pret as it navigates this transition and expands its footprint in the UK market.
