UPDATE: In a powerful celebration of art and culture, Montenegro marked its 20th anniversary of independence with an electrifying concert by renowned composer Žarko Mirković at the Music Center of Montenegro in Podgorica on October 21, 2023. This event, which was Mirković’s first performance in six years, has captivated audiences and highlighted the significance of national pride through music.

The concert featured the premiere of two new symphonic compositions by Mirković, including the evocative “Otisak nestale zemlje” and a collection titled “Crnogorske.” Conducted by Bojan Suđić, the performance was met with an overwhelming response from a packed auditorium, emphasizing the emotional weight of the occasion.

The atmosphere was charged with anticipation, as attendees were treated to a showcase of Mirković’s nearly 50-year musical career, with a particular focus on his roots in folklore. The concert’s theme, “Narodna muzika,” resonated deeply, reaffirming the composer’s belief that folklore is the foundational language of his artistic expression.

In the second half of the concert, soprano Snežana Savičić-Sekulić and bass Ivan Šarić, along with the Academic Choir “Krsmanović – Obilić,” performed the acclaimed “Triptiha” for soloists, choir, and symphonic orchestra. The poignant rendition stirred memories of the Music Center’s early days and the artists who laid the groundwork for its success.

The event not only celebrated Mirković’s contributions to Montenegrin music but also paid homage to those instrumental in the establishment of the country’s symphonic traditions. Past performers, including the late conductor Darinka Matić-Marović and violinist Grigorij Krasko, were remembered fondly, echoing their legacy in the hearts of many present.

As attendees reveled in the performance’s high emotional stakes, the synergy between the orchestra and its conductor shone through. Suđić’s masterful direction ensured that Mirković’s intricate ideas were vividly realized, showcasing the orchestra’s skill and the emotional depth of the compositions.
