UPDATE: Major UK supermarkets, including Aldi, Lidl, and M&S, have announced they will close all North East stores for 24 hours on Boxing Day, prioritizing staff well-being during the busy festive season. This urgent development comes as shoppers prepare for the post-Christmas rush on December 26, 2023.
As the festive season progresses, shoppers are already gearing up for Boxing Day sales, with only 20 days remaining until the big day. Town centers are set to welcome bargain hunters seeking discounts, replenishing supplies after Christmas celebrations, or simply grabbing essentials like milk and bread. However, with key players like Aldi and Lidl shutting their doors, shoppers need to plan ahead to avoid being caught without vital goods.
Tesco and Sainsbury’s will be among the few major retailers open on Boxing Day, operating from 9 AM to 6 PM, while Sainsbury’s Local stores will extend hours until 9 PM. Meanwhile, Asda will also welcome customers during standard hours of 9 AM to 6 PM.
In a statement, Rebecca Heley, Communications Director at Aldi UK, emphasized the importance of rest for employees, stating, “Christmas is a special time, and we want to ensure all of our colleagues have the opportunity to relax and enjoy it with their loved ones.” This sentiment echoes through Lidl as well, which confirmed that all of its outlets will remain closed.
The decision by M&S to close all stores on Boxing Day is a significant move, with operations director Jayne Wall noting, “Like most retailers, we always have some colleagues in our stores and depots on Boxing Day to help reset. However, this year we will have more colleagues working than previously so we are in great shape to welcome customers on December 27.”
Other retailers are also adjusting their schedules. Waitrose will not open any of its primary outlets, although some Welcome Break and Shell-affiliated locations may remain operational. Morrisons is expected to follow last year’s Boxing Day schedule, likely opening from 9 AM to 6 PM in England and Wales.
As the holiday season approaches, shoppers are urged to keep these changes in mind to avoid last-minute shopping dilemmas. The landscape of Boxing Day retail is evolving, with a focus on employee welfare taking precedence this year.
Next steps: Keep an eye on local store announcements and be prepared to adjust your shopping plans accordingly. The festive rush is just around the corner, and staying informed will ensure you don’t miss out on essential goods.
