URGENT UPDATE: Free hedge-laying and natural fencing workshops are confirmed for November 21-23 at the Bee Ark, just north of the Monkey Bridge footbridge. This is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in enhancing local biodiversity through traditional rural skills.
The workshops, organized by the local conservation group Newt, will kick off with two days of hedge-laying on Friday, November 21, and Saturday, November 22. On Sunday, November 23, participants can learn how to build a natural fence using sustainable materials.
Richard Harrison, founder of Newt, emphasizes the importance of hedge-laying, stating, “Hedge-laying is one of the most cost-effective things we can do to enhance biodiversity.” He will lead the courses, which will cover essential skills including the types of trees to use, obtaining permissions on public land, and conducting risk assessments.
Harrison noted the significant ecological benefits of laid hedges, including enhanced habitats for nesting birds and increased populations of hedgehogs, shrews, and mice. “Where we have laid hedges in the past, we have seen a significant uptick in wildlife,” he added.
The hands-on workshops will not only teach the basics but also showcase the Berkshire style of hedge-laying, with a live demonstration beside a hedge laid five years ago.
On the final day, participants can join Polly Pereira and Clare Kendall from the Bee Ark for a practical session on natural fencing, utilizing chestnut posts and materials from the hedge-laying efforts. There’s no need to register for the fencing workshop; attendees can simply show up and enjoy complimentary tea and biscuits.
IMPORTANT: Spots for the hedge-laying course are limited, and interested individuals must contact Harrison at [email protected] to secure their place. The workshop is free and includes food, making it an accessible opportunity for all.
Don’t miss this chance to learn valuable skills while contributing to the local ecosystem. The workshops are about more than just practical knowledge; they represent a community effort to promote sustainability and wildlife conservation.
Join us at the Bee Ark from November 21 to November 23 and play a vital role in enhancing biodiversity in your area!
