UPDATE: A devoted elderly couple, David Jeffcock, 80, and Susan Jeffcock, 74, tragically took their lives by jumping from a cliff in Whitby, North Yorkshire, following Mr. Jeffcock’s terminal cancer diagnosis. Details emerging from an inquest today reveal the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding their deaths on July 30, 2023.
The couple, who had spent the majority of their lives in Sheffield, confirmed their intentions in a letter sent to their solicitor before the incident. Authorities report that the couple was discovered on the rocks below East Cliff, prompting an urgent investigation.
Mr. Jeffcock’s nephew, Kevin Shepherd, stated during the inquest that his uncle had been suffering from bone cancer and likely chose to end his life due to unbearable pain. “I can only conclude he was in so much pain he didn’t want to keep deteriorating,” Shepherd said. He emphasized the couple’s deep devotion, noting, “Although she was younger, Susan chose to join David.”
This tragic event underscores the profound emotional and physical toll of terminal illness. The couple had relocated to Whitby, a cherished coastal town, after retirement, fulfilling a lifelong dream. They had no children and spent their years traveling together, showcasing their strong bond.
On the day of their deaths, a passerby discovered personal belongings, including a mobile phone and jacket, at the cliff’s edge, leading to the grim discovery. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, with their bodies airlifted by the Coastguard.
The inquest revealed that Mr. Jeffcock had visited the emergency room multiple times earlier in the year due to acute health issues. Detective Inspector Jenkinson from North Yorkshire Police noted that a folded jacket used as a marker at the cliff suggested prior planning. He stated, “It is possible Mr. Jeffcock jumped first and Mrs. Jeffcock may have hesitated before following.”
Coroner Jonathan Leach recorded a conclusion of suicide for both individuals, stating they had no history of mental health issues, though Mr. Jeffcock faced significant physical health challenges. The heart-wrenching case has raised questions about the support available for those facing terminal illnesses.
