East Kilbride Abuser Jailed for 20 Months After Violent Assault

UPDATE: A domestic abuser has been sentenced to 20 months in prison after a shocking incident in East Kilbride where he spat blood in his partner’s face and attempted to strike her with a glass bottle. Ryan Podmore, aged 32, was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court on November 28, and is expected to be released soon due to early release regulations.

Podmore’s violent actions occurred on February 15 at the victim’s residence in Hume Place, East Kilbride, while he was already on two bail orders. The couple had been in a relationship for approximately 15 months but did not cohabit.

According to Lanarkshire Live, prosecutor Lewis Devoy detailed the harrowing events of that evening. After spending time at a pub, the couple returned home, where an argument erupted. The victim, alarmed by Podmore’s behavior, contacted her sister for help, who could hear Podmore shouting in the background. Despite her pleas for him to leave, Podmore grew increasingly aggressive, even punching himself in the face, resulting in visible injuries.

In a disturbing turn of events, he then spat blood on his partner, leaving her covered in his bloody spittle. He escalated the confrontation by throwing a glass vodka bottle at her, which she narrowly avoided. In a desperate attempt to escape, the victim fled the property and called the police. Officers discovered her distressed in the common close.

“She was visibly upset,” Mr. Devoy noted during the court proceedings.

During sentencing, Sheriff Colin Dunipace remarked on Podmore’s troubling history, as he has a prior conviction for assaulting the same victim. Despite the victim’s request not to impose a non-harassment order, the sheriff emphasized that she might not be equipped to determine her best interests. Consequently, he enforced a three-month non-harassment order to protect the victim upon Podmore’s release.

Podmore’s sentence is backdated to February 17, meaning he could be eligible for early release later this month. The court’s decision highlights the urgent need for protective measures for victims of domestic violence.

This case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by victims of domestic abuse and the importance of judicial intervention to ensure their safety. As this story develops, further updates will be provided.
