Drivers Face £20,000 Fines for Leaving Dogs in Cold Cars

URGENT UPDATE: As freezing temperatures sweep across the UK, pet owners are being warned of the severe consequences of leaving dogs unattended in cold vehicles. Experts stress that the interior temperature of a parked car can plummet within minutes, posing a serious risk to pets.

Pet safety authorities, including Chris Maxted, director of Dog-G8, have issued a stark warning: leaving dogs in chilly cars could lead to fines of up to £20,000 and even imprisonment under the Animal Welfare Act. “Many owners underestimate the dangers of winter,” Maxted cautioned.

Temperatures in closed vehicles can drop dangerously low, leading to dehydration and, in extreme cases, hypothermia. Maxted emphasized that if a dog must be left alone, it should be for no longer than a couple of minutes and only when outside temperatures hover between 0°C and 15°C. Anything lower can quickly become hazardous.

“Cold conditions inside a vehicle can lead to serious health issues for pets,” Maxted added. “Owners need to be vigilant, as even a short absence can have dire consequences.”

The risks are particularly acute for older dogs, who may suffer from arthritis or other health issues exacerbated by the cold. “A gentle lift into the vehicle can ease discomfort,” Maxted advised, highlighting that small adjustments can significantly improve winter travel for pets.

To mitigate risks, Maxted recommends starting the car and allowing the cabin to warm up before bringing pets outside. This strategy helps prevent the shock of extreme temperature changes for sensitive animals. However, he cautioned against directing heating vents straight at a pet’s resting area, as this can lead to overheating or dehydration.

For longer trips, Maxted advises packing extra blankets to keep pets warm without solely relying on the car’s heating system. “Comfort is key, especially during these colder months,” he said.

Pet owners are urged to take immediate action to protect their furry friends as winter conditions intensify. With temperatures dropping sharply, the time to act is now.
