Dietitian Urges to Rethink Cold Myths as Winter Approaches

URGENT UPDATE: A new poll reveals that over a quarter of UK adults still believe in outdated myths about catching colds, just as the winter season approaches. With temperatures dropping, 27% of respondents think simply being outdoors in the cold can lead to illness.

The survey, conducted among 2,000 UK adults, highlights a widespread misunderstanding about cold weather and health. 28% of participants associate going outside with wet hair to falling ill, while 22% believe sitting in a draughty room can make them sick. Alarmingly, 29% of adults also think that cold weather weakens the immune system.

This study, commissioned by Yakult, aims to debunk these myths. Registered dietitian Lucy Kerrison emphasizes that “cold weather or damp hair don’t cause colds – viruses do.” As people spend more time indoors during winter, viruses can spread more easily, making it essential to strengthen your immune system now.

Kerrison highlights the importance of gut health, stating that approximately 70% of the body’s immune cells reside in the gut. “These microbes help ‘train’ your immune system,” she explains. To promote gut health, she advises a diverse diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, and herbs.

With 42% of Britons struggling to maintain healthy gut function in winter, many are tempted by richer comfort foods as the season changes. Additionally, 41% of adults confess that their busy social calendars complicate maintaining balanced diets, especially during festive gatherings.

To navigate these challenges, 27% of individuals have turned to social media for gut health tips, though 63% admit online health guidance can be confusing. Dr. Holly Neill, science manager for Yakult, warns, “Wellness trends can sound simple, but not everything is scientifically backed.” She advises caution against blanket recommendations, emphasizing that nutrition is complex.
